Choosing an LMS in Saudi Arabia usually starts with the obvious things: courses, assessments, certificates, reporting and price.
Then NELC and FutureX enter the picture.
A platform can work well as an LMS and still not be ready for NELC and FutureX.
That means LMS selection is not only about delivering training. It is also about whether the platform can support the way learner activity needs to be reported in Saudi Arabia.

What NELC and FutureX mean for your LMS
NELC is the National eLearning Center in Saudi Arabia. It regulates eLearning and online training in the Kingdom.
FutureX is Saudi Arabia's National eLearning Platform.
For training providers, learner activity from the LMS may need to be sent to FutureX. That can include:
- course enrolment
- course start
- lesson completion
- assessment attempts
- learner progress
- course completion
- certificates
NELC uses xAPI and a Learning Record Store, or LRS, to receive this learner journey data.
The real question is whether your LMS can send the required learner data to FutureX correctly.
xAPI support does not always mean FutureX support
Many LMS platforms say they support xAPI. That does not automatically mean they support NELC FutureX.
xAPI is the standard used to send learning records. FutureX still expects those records to contain the right learner, course and activity information.
So instead of only asking, “Do you support xAPI?”, ask, “Do you support NELC FutureX integration?”
A FutureX integration may need to handle learner identity, course activity, assessment results, progress, certificates and the order in which those events happen.
What should your LMS be able to report?
Take a typical learner journey. A learner enrols, starts the course, watches a video, completes a lesson, takes an assessment, passes the course and receives a certificate.
The LMS needs to turn those actions into learning records that can be sent to FutureX.
We built our NELC/FutureX integration specifically for Open edX. It converts supported Open edX learner events into NELC xAPI statements and sends them to the FutureX Learning Record Store.
The integration supports events such as enrolment, course start, video activity, lesson and module completion, assessment attempts, learner progress, course completion and certificates. It can also support attendance and course-rating events where those are available.
This lets the platform report the learner journey, not just the final course result.
Learner identity matters too
FutureX reporting is not only about course activity. The learner also needs to be identified correctly.
Our integration can use the learner's National ID or Iqama as part of the reporting process.
This should be planned before learner migration starts. If existing learner records do not contain the required identity data, cleaning that up later can become a migration problem.
Ask your LMS vendor how this information will be collected, checked and managed.
What happens if FutureX is unavailable?
A learner should not be stopped from taking a course because FutureX is temporarily unavailable.
We built the integration so the learning record is first saved in the LMS and then sent to FutureX in the background. If the connection fails, the system can retry later.
It is also designed to reduce duplicate records and keep learner events in the correct order. The learner can continue without waiting for FutureX to respond.
Where does PDPL fit?
NELC and PDPL are different. NELC deals with eLearning and training. PDPL, Saudi Arabia's Personal Data Protection Law, deals with personal data.
An LMS can hold names, email addresses, National ID or Iqama, assessment results, certificates and course progress, so PDPL should also be part of the LMS buying process.
Ask the vendor:
- Where is learner data stored?
- Who can access it?
- Where are backups stored?
- Which other services process learner data?
- Does any learner data move outside Saudi Arabia?
Then review those answers with whoever handles privacy or compliance in your organization.
Is your current LMS ready for NELC and FutureX?
If you already use an LMS, ask:
- Do you support NELC FutureX specifically, or only general xAPI?
- Can you report the learner journey, not just completion?
- Can you handle National ID or Iqama?
- What happens if FutureX is unavailable?
- Can failed records be sent again?
- How do you prevent duplicate or out-of-order records?
- Does the platform support Arabic and RTL?
- Can it manage different client organizations?
If your vendor cannot answer these clearly, FutureX readiness is still an open question.
